Just ‘yesterday’… September 19th (1964!), the West Venice Cafe Expresso, the fabled poetry den of the Beats, was ticketed without good rhyme nor reason. “There shalt be no poetry without thy permit.” so said the City via the voice of its solemnly swore police officers. So, yes, of course, they fought back, but, by the time the court heard their side of the story – and ruled in their favor – re-opening was beyond the pale.
50 years later, though, in a renaissance of sorts, The Osteria Venice West is now its continuance, and the subject of yet another post by RW Klarin under the LA Free Press ‘Remembrance’ Tab.
