Draft Resistance in Watts

The war wasn’t on our shore, but there was a draft to take our boys to it.
Now it is, and now there isn’t… because how we ‘fight’ has changed (going from hand-to-hand to net-to-net), and ‘conscription’ has been camouflaged as an employment opportunity.
But that is, truly, a discussion of many facets… one best done over at the LAFreePress.com site (under the “A Unique Perspective” tab). (You should check that out some time).
Right now, on ‘this’ day, 50 years ago, the discussion on the Front Page of the LA Free Press was exposing the roots of a coming crisis – the disportionate disappearance of black men from their communities. All these years later, what went on, why it went on, and how it continually impacted their social and economic development… and the consequent current status of their citizenship and its beliefs… still needs to be considered… if one is to understand their contemporary rebellion.
At this moment, though, in this article, the focus is on the individual, and how their situation contrasts with the men of a different color. (Was ‘white’ even considered a ‘color’ back then… is it even considered a color now? As it heads toward minority status in that very same city?) Here the plan was to work within ‘the system’.
However, the system was not just then and not just enough now. So why is it that ‘we’ were so surprised that ‘they’ finally changed their tactics to state more clearly and more loudly that… blacklivesmatter?
And, yet, with a 50 year perspective of all of the damage done, it seems that this should only be the beginning… Is there, possibly, a blackcommunitiesmatter protest just around the corner?

It’s Our 3rd-Year Anniversary!

And my, my, my… have we grown! You can read ALL about it, here, in the article entitled: Has The Freep Gone ‘Establishment?’. But just in case you’re only interested in those basics, here’s what’s there, plus more:
*The 1st Issue was founded, funded and written by Art Kunkin in 1964. At this point, the LA FP has 25 full-time staffers.
*The 1st {Official} Issue (released 2 months later… July 30th!) was 8 pages. We made it to 12 pages a couple of times, and then celebrated our 1st, to-be-the-norm, 16-pager about 20 months from that beginning. Not quite a year later, we were heading to the steady 24 pages that we are at ‘now’.
*In ’64, a couple of thousand prints. Now, regularly, 60,000.
*Our guestimate is that the ‘pass-around’ is about 3x that, so a ‘Readership’ of, perhaps, 150,000. (Truly, the LA FP WAS the news. Lawyer-types bought it from the hawkers at the corners – “Don’t be a creep, buy a Freep”. And it was a must-read at every protest, at every Love-In, Be-In, Teach-In, Sit-In – in a word, In and everywhere the non-lawyer types hung out.
*The majority of these Readers were in LA, as you would imagine. But, too, by hitchhiker’s thumb, and even by annnual subscription – ($5 then… and STILL $5 now 🙂 ) – it was read right across the entire Country. And then a leap from NYC to ‘Nam.
And, as you can see, at least 1 guy in England.

It’s that very last thing that makes me want to make you look past these mere statistics, and to urge you to actually READ the article. When you do, you’ll find out why someone who had been awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature “in recognition of his varied and significant writings in which he champions humanitarian ideals and freedom of thought” found us to be his type of newspaper. And, really, it is the statements in this article that account for the growth noted above. (And, only because we’ve a very unique advantage over here at the LA FP Archives – the exponetial growth that it will soon see as The Movements bloom, and the ‘mainstream’ press fails to report.)
So, click on those Pages and blow them up to ‘read-ability, see the reasons we were established, see the reasons for our success, and stay with us to watch how we became the “Icon of the Counter-Culture”.

And, of course, as this Issue isn’t just about us, please check our ‘sister site’, the FB Page – LAFPMusic – for ‘this’ week’s adverts: ‘Tomorrow’ The Magic Mushroom is having it’s Grand Opening, and the Fantasy Faire and Magic Music Festival opens the day after! You’ll see those adverts (and more) posted there then 🙂

Police Police? …and Bill Cosby’s Rolls Royce

Police Police? Yes, indeedy. Police the Police.
On the 23rd, when the ‘police riot’ broke out, we put together a Special Edition.. just as if we were a ‘daily’ (except, of course, with nothing but the ‘true’ news). In an effort to protect the President from peaceful protestors – for gosh sake, there were even women there with their babies – the police were swinging hard. Men, women, journalists, no matter – if they were there, just by being there, they were fair game.
So, that Special Edition was of the moment – with reports ‘live’ from the scene of the crime. We followed that up with an Issue on our regular weekly print day, with re-prints and the articles that took a bit longer to write, one that also included the reports of the people our reporters had spoken with directly.
THIS issue has the reports that flowed in afterwards. Go ahead, read the Letters to the Editor… first-hand accounts, in words actually written by those it happened to. And, also, a little bit of writing by the ACLU; their suit against Century City for letting it happen. (In those days, $50,000 was a lot more than chicken feed.) We are reprinting the first 3 pages of this issue here, but there are many more. (Let us know if you want to see more, know more… if so, just head over to the ‘Archive Request’ box on our .com site.)

Also with regard to ‘writing’, our Front Page alerts you to look for more on the Watts Riot. We reported on that, too, and also right from the scene… now you’ll certainly have even more eye-witness news, also not ‘filtered’ by the mainstream media.

Finally, perhaps not expecting to still be in the news all these years later – and, this time, with one of the good deeds for which he was known back then – is Mr. Bill Cosby. Apparently, he was in LA again, a break from traveling the world with Kelly Robinson as a (shusssh) secret agent man. Hey, hey, hey… it’s just $2 bucks for that Rolls Royce.

Why did it happen? Art Kunkin gives you his thoughts… but, first, check out Page 9 for some background. There, at the top-right, you’ll see the Front Page of the Special Edition that we did that past Friday. The Page, itself, gives you the story of the Police Riot that erupted that day.

The entire story, with many views from numerous witness and points of view, and the balance of Mr. Kunkin’s thinking will soon be posted in our ‘A Unique Perspective’ section.
