Girl’s Speech @ UN Conference on Environment and Development
The United Nations Conference on Environment and Development, also known as the Rio Summit, Earth Summit (or, in Portuguese, Eco ‘92) was a major conference held in Rio de Janeiro from June 3 to June 14, 1992.
178 governments participated, with 118 sending their heads of state or government.Some 2,400 representatives of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) attended, with 17,000 people at the parallel NGO Forum, who had so-called Consultative Status.
The issues addressed included:
*systematic scrutiny of patterns of production — particularly the production of toxic components, such as lead in gasoline, or poisonous waste;
*alternative sources of energy to replace the use of fossil fuels which are linked to global climate change;
*new reliance on public transportation systems in order to reduce vehicle emissions, congestion in cities and the health problems caused by polluted air and smog;
*the growing scarcity of water.
An important achievement was an agreement on the Climate Change Convention which in turn led to the Kyoto Protocol. Another was agreement to “not carry out any activities on the lands of indigenous peoples that would cause environmental degradation or that would be culturally inappropriate”.
The Convention on Biological Diversity was opened for signature at the Earth Summit, and made a start towards redefinition of money supply measures that did not inherently encourage destruction of natural ecoregions and so-called uneconomic growth.
Twelve cities were also honoured by the Local Government Honours Award for innovative local environmental programs. These included Sudbury, Ontario in Canada for its ambitious program to rehabilitate environmental damage from the local mining industry, Austin, Texas in the United States for its green building strategy, and Kitakyushu in Japan for incorporating an international education and training component into its municipal pollution control program.
The Earth Summit resulted in the following documents:
*Rio Declaration on Environment and Development;
*Agenda 21;
*Convention on Biological Diversity;
*Forest Principles;
*Framework Convention on Climate Change.
Both Convention on Biological Diversity and Framework Convention on Climate Change were set as legally binding agreements.
Critics, however, point out that many of the agreements made in Rio have not been realized regarding such fundamental issues as fighting poverty and cleaning up the environment.

im a retard, just got the sarcasm, i need to jump off bridge
this girl should …
this girl should save her breathe. these really dont care. they really dont
This kid can talk.
This kid can talk.
She is convinced …
She is convinced that all environmental change is attributed to human action, and that adults are heartless, wasteful idiots. She doesn’t know of the massive amount of financial and philanthropic efforts contributed every day of every year? Some suffer because of their own actions, not inacton of those in power. Often the enviro-activism is used by the enviro-fascists agenda to demonize humans, make a power grab to dissolve our liberties.
@abejon2002 what ?? …
@abejon2002 what ?? which side are you speaking for
not all children… …
not all children… some girls have to walk miles to just get a gallon of water for their families… some are capable of writing and thinking… but most children in europe, africa, AND EVEN AMERICA!
almost 18000 people …
almost 18000 people viewed this message, I wonder how many people actually think about what this girl is saying, especially since there are only 44!!! people that responded, of which some people even make bad remarks.
It’s unfortunate the average joe with common sense wants to put in more effort to change this world, than the people that actually have the power to change it.
Governments give these issue the same amount of priority as how many parking tickets should be given per year. sad.
wow she’s only 13, …
wow she’s only 13, well she has got a good point adults need to make the world better otherwise how shall we survive if we do not have the resources needed? Man the people on this post(most people) must really don’t care that she is trying to make a change
Some suffer because …
Some suffer because of their own actions, most suffer because actions of others, all suffer because indifference of most
What liberties? …
What liberties? Watching football and drinking beer?
Remember the words of Pastor Martin Niemöller
First they destroy the environment, and I did not speak out—because I was not a environmentalist;
Then they destroy the economy, and I did not speak out—because I was not a economist;
Then they destroy my liberties—and there was no one left to speak out.
And then this one by Tacitus:
The worst crimes were dared by a few, willed by more and tolerated by all
Uhh…actually, we …
Uhh…actually, we did think about those things years ago. When did Earth Day start? Let’s remember that extinctions happened long before people even appeared on the planet. That’s not to say we shouldn’t take care of the planet…we should do everything we can. But let’s not make this out to be something new. And we’re not willing to share? Seems to me that every time some catastrophe happens, North Americans are the first ones rushing all kinds of aid to wherever it’s needed.
I watched this …
I watched this tonight, actually looking for an “inappropriate speech”. The message this child brought to the UN brought tears to my eyes. I wish we had more people like her that would stand up for the rights of children, animals and the environment. I have read posts stating that the US helps those countries in need. I do agree with that, but think of the billions, or rather trillions that is spent monthly on wars that will never be won…..
I don’t care is she …
I don’t care is she is the daughter of a tree frog and a dolphin or if her father played a part in her speech I would suspect he did as he raised her so by default is it safe to say he had a 50% part? and mom the other 50%? I will however bet that in your entire life you will not have come close to to the bravery of this child. Work on you and whoever makes you better doen’t take away from your accomplishments in life.
YOU ARE WEAK
While her message …
While her message was great and she presented it incredibly well for such a young person, it should be noted that she is the daughter of a famous Canadian environmentalist David Suzuki. Odds are that he had a big part to play in the writing of the speech.
why didnt they …
why didnt they listen!?
its still like that today..(thogh a bit better)
I apologize for my …
I apologize for my ceptcism but i don’t really think that she made that speech… but the point is not that…what matters the most is the message… even if it had been an adult it would mean a great deal and that is what people should always focus on … THE MESSAGE not the messenger
I completely agree …
I completely agree with everything she said and if I had the opportunity to do the same I would…. Adults dont listen. Ever. Everyone is to concerned about Capital Gain.
Nothing has changed…. and it’s becoming harder and harder to fight to save the world, when over half the world is bent on destroying it.
17 yrs ago she …
17 yrs ago she spoke this speech at the UN. 17 yrs later nothing much have change. doom is upon us human.
LOL.

LOL.
exploiting a child?
I will say those things if I were given an opportunity like that. You can see she is doing that on her own will. People like you make me sick. Everything is negative in your eyes.
